National Poetry Day was celebrated nationwide on
Thursday 4 October and at Bearwood, the 3rd Form
scholars commemorated the day with a Poetry Slam!
Our librarian, Patricia Loch, arranged for representatives from the company “Poetry Slam” to coach the scholars and then to hold a competition in the style of a danceoff.
Topics for poems ranged from “Food” to “Dreams”
to “No Clue” as scholars worked hard in their groups to come up with the edgiest, most entertaining piece of performance poetry. The trickiest part seemed to be thinking of a first line, but once the initial barrier was broken down, they moved swiftly on to compose twelve lines of rhythmic, choreographed
poetry.
The afternoon saw much laughter, creativity and fun – it was a fantastic way to pay homage to our country’s great poetic tradition.
