Education beyond the classroom

At Bearwood Pre-Prep diverse opportunities for learning beyond the classroom are recognised and exploited. Our pupils enjoy using the expansive grounds for play but also for academic pursuits: pond dipping at the lake and plant study in Science, nature observation and natural resource collection for inspiration in Art and exploration of the Victorian mansion in History are just some of the ways we can use our immediate environment. In addition, the children enjoy regular trips to local places of interest. Recent visits have included an opportunity to experience life at a Victorian school and a day out to the Henry Moore sculpture exhibition at Kew Gardens.

Music and Drama

Music plays an important part in our curriculum. Children from Reception through to Year 2 enjoy two music lessons per week with a specialist teacher. Pupils are taught to listen, accompany and appreciate a variety of musical styles as well as to sing and play percussion instruments and the recorder. From Year 1 it is possible to arrange individual music lessons. Currently guitar, piano and violin are popular.

Opportunities for drama are numerous. Pre-Prep children are encouraged to take an active part in our weekly “show and tell” assembly which for some is their first chance to address an audience. As their confidence grows there are further opportunities for pupils to perform and all the children have a role to play in our drama presentation for parents and friends at the end of each term.
